Farmer's Market Fresh

Whatcha Got Growing?

garden

The weather in Southern California is (slightly) cooling off and I’ve planted some cool-weather plants: mixed greens, green onions, carrots, kale, and cabbage. I won’t be able to live on it for another two months (who am I kidding?) but it feels good to know that I’ll be able to go out into my backyard and get fresh, vitamin-packed produce that I grew myself. Lucky for me we don’t get much frost so I might be able to save a few bucks at the local farmer’s market.

I’m a little hesitant to grow something a bit more substantial, like broccoli, but I’m working up the courage. Little by slowly, grasshoppers. Without the frost to bite my plants to death, I’m currently battling snails, slugs, and the neighborhood cat that likes to use our planting beds as his personal litter box. Keeping all the pests away while maintaining an organic garden is a lot easier than it used to be, thanks to all the white granola people driving up the demand, so, thank you, Caucasian granola folks. Just say NO! to GMO!

Anyone else growing anything, or are all of you living in the nether regions of outer Siberia?
