A new study released today asserts that “healthy obesity” is an oxymoron. A new report published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine from Canadian doctors who reviewed 8 previous studies revealed,
Just having good metabolic numbers doesn’t protect you from fat’s deleterious effects, said study co-author Dr. Bernard Zinman, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and director of the diabetes center at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.
Some health professionals have “coined the term ‘healthy obesity,’” Zinman said. “When we performed a systematic review of studies that followed people for more than 10 years, indeed, even in those who were metabolically pristine, there was still an increased risk of cardiovascular death and heart attack. Healthy obesity is a myth.” [SOURCE]
Steve Siebold, author of the book Die Fat or Get Tough: 101 Differences in Thinking Between Fat People and Fit People, feels vindicated by this news. He has pushed this exact message in the media for the past four years despite massive criticism including death threats.
His thoughts:
Researchers in the medical community are finally admitting that ‘healthy obesity’ is a myth. Too many doctors have been lying to their obese patients telling them they are healthy, which with all the information available on the threats of obesity is a classic example of self-delusion. The bottom line: the longer you carry the fat, the more likely you will suffer catastrophically.
– Obesity brings with it type two diabetes and a vast array of ailments that will rob you of energy, health and happiness. The facts are real: obesity will make you sick…eventually. One way or another, you’re going to pay the price. The battle of the bulge is a war that must be won.
– Let’s hope this new study shakes people up and undoes the harm of when the AMA classified obesity as a disease, which was utter nonsense. Unless you have a medical condition that causes weight gain, which is a very small percentage of people, you are responsible. It’s not the restaurants, food manufacturers, portion sizes or anything else. You are the problem and you are the solution in your weight loss journey.
– Health and fitness must be earned the old fashioned way: through hard work, discipline and willpower. Whatever you hear to the contrary is a lie. The benefits of winning the weight war outnumber the cost of success.
