Thankful for a Second Chances

By Eugenia Berg

What can I say about taking a second chance on love and marriage? The one thing I can say for sure is I thank God for second chances; no one does them quite like him. If most people knew some things I’d gone through in my first marriage, you’d wonder why I even took this risk again. I took it because I believe that as humans we are meant for companionship, we’re meant to be loved, and we’re meant to share our lives. When I met Matt in summer of 2009 from of all places him contacting me from my Craigslist ad, yes risk taking is my thing, I never would have imagined that his love would bring me around to wanting to get married again.

After I divorced I was utterly convinced I’d never do the marriage thing again. What would I do besides it? Well I had no idea but marriage was off the table. I thought it would be great to have a long term commitment and leave it at that. But I meet this wonderful guy who was family-oriented, sweet, smart, funny, handsome, generous, compassionate, and nice to babies and old people. I thought after awhile, I think I like him, then I thought I think I love him, then I thought I think I can’t live without him and finally just in the most natural sense of it I thought I have to marry him. Luckily, he was thinking the same thing.

Now I’m not big time girl when it comes to fantastic events, as much as I love wedding shows I had no plans to go all out with this wedding. My mind functions practical and the practical me wanted to save money on the wedding and spend it on the honeymoon and come away from the whole deal, debt-free. So our wedding was very basic in every sense, I knew I wanted it in our church to done by our Pastor, who’s also my friend. We didn’t decorate anything but it happened to be one the most beautiful days of sunshine in Seattle, Washington the whole year so the sun shone in brightly in huge plate glass windows in the ceiling. It all happened so fast I could barely remember any it, luckily someone took a video. Poor Matt was as nervous as he could be, but the moment we stood in front of our family and friends and said our vows, I do remember that as I spoke mine to him no one else in that church existed. We had a personal conversation at that altar about our love and commitment to one another. Then we were married, off to a nice dinner at a brewery, we love beer and then off on our honeymoon to Troutdale, Oregon. It was all simple; we’re kind of simple folks not too pretentious. We make the perfect couple, we have birthdays the day after the other so we’re extremely compatible.

But when Christelyn asked me to do this post, the one thing I wanted to get across is that you can have a second chance at love even if your heart has been broken into a million pieces and mine had, that doesn’t mean you can’t find someone who will gently repair it and love you for exactly who you are. Matt and I did that for one another, he’s not only my husband he’s my blessing and I am so thankful for him.
