I happened passed a conversation on Facebook from a black woman asking if there were any R Kelly fans in the house. Some women replied with delight, naming their favorite albums and concerts they’d been to. While others, myself included, said in no uncertain terms we were NOT fans of Mr. Kelly, who has a history of exploiting black girls in unspeakable ways and getting away with it because he can saaaaaang.

The fans of R Kelly said that they could separate his sexual deviance from his music, and couldn’t understand why others were outraged. They all made excuses for their continued fandom of this disgusting trash.

And therein lies the problem in the black community. We make excuses for the MEN we lionize. We turn the other way and ignore the long line of misdeeds they’ve done. Perhaps what is more enraging is that the black women are the ones who keep this monster’s bills paid. Black women with daughters.

You know what it makes me think, when you’re willing to ignore a man who exploits young girls because he has talent? I think you’re the same kind of woman that would allow your boyfriend to rape your daughter because he’s tall, dark and handsome or that he helps you pay the rent. I think you’re the type of woman that blames innocent black girls being raped and impregnated by grown men for being “fast.” And if you bring the Christianity and forgiveness as a reason for your continued support for monsters, I’ll be sure to never step foot in the church you attend. Christianity and forgiveness was the reason my family covered for an uncle who raped his special needs cousin. I want none of it.

In short, if you are willing to ignore evil men because you like bopping your head to the beat, you’re capable to tolerating so much more evil, and frankly, you scare me.

So no; we can’t be friends.
