Bill Cosby, the man known as “America’s father” has been convicted of three counts of sexual assault today in Norristown, Pennsylvania. A victorious Gloria Allred asked, “How many women does it take to accuse a rich, successful man of rape? In this case, four.”
Four women led the charge against Bill Cosby, who was convicted of drugging and raping his victims, but as many as 60+ women have come forward recounting similar experiences. Rumors swirled for decades that Cosby was doing these things, but he hid in plain sight by powerful network executives who sought to preserve his reputation while he fattened their pockets.
As the aged, former comedian with failing eyesight was helped into an SUV, a reporter shouts, “Mr. Cosby, are you prepared to go to prison, sir?” I assume in his arrogance, coupled with his many years of getting away with such behaviors, that he certainly is NOT ready for prison.
When I think about how many black women openly came out to through their bodies in front of Cosby while they attacked the hoards of women who came forward as being liars, it reminds me that we can not, and should not be so quick to defend the sexual misconduct we damn well know happens in our communities. It’s not just Uncle Pooky molesting young black girls and women while being protected by the women around him, it’s successful men like Cosby who engage in this behavior too.
Reports say Cosby laughed, mocked and scoffed witnesses as they testified. When convicted, he stood up and said to the judge, “You asshole!”
What say all of you? Do you think Bill Cosby should go straight to jail? He is now facing up to 30 years in prison.
