I want to be Sophia Angeli Nelson when I grow up. I mean, she’s an attorney, political commentator, social activist, writer, has the bat phone number to Michelle Obama, and wears the HAY-ELL out of a jean jacket.
Exhibit A:
That’s after she finished her photo shoot for the cover of her upcoming book, Black Woman Redefined. The book isn’t due for another seven months or so, but because I’m a badassblackchick and all the BB&W are equally as badassed, Sophia selected our site to give us a sneak peek into just want Black Woman Redefined is all about.
In the book, Sophia explores the notion (along with other high-profile figures) of why black women have such an “aura of negativity” in our community and the world at large. (I wonder this too about myself, since I regularly use deodorant, yet many folks think I STINK to high heaven. But anyway, back to Sophia.)
AND ANOTHER THING! I’ve got to admit that I’m also a little jelly that she’s looking so good on her cover in that designer dress. I mean dang!, can I HAVE A MILITIA of makeup artists, hairstylists and clothing designers so I can look THAT good on my book cover when it comes out in 546 days, 23.75 hours, 25 minutes and I-don’t-know-how-many seconds? Or is she like those women on the Lifetime Movie Channel, who just wake up looking like Ericka Kane?
Now after all that visual stimulation, you MUST listen to our interview. She gives some frank talk about her views on interracial relationships, and how she brings in Mrs. Don’t Bring Home a White Boy herself, Karyn Folan to weigh in.
Nelson, who has recently been in a serious on-and-off relationship with a rainbow man, speaks frankly about her torn feelings about IRR and the very real REALITY and black women need to seriously consider opening up their options.
