Beauty: BB&W Exclusive! Shelley Davis, Creator of Kinky-Curly Gives Tips on Natural Hair Care

Don’t ask me how I do it, just be happy I did. I recently got the chance to sit down with Shelley Davis, creator of the fantabulous Kinky-Curly line of products for natural hair, which I know a lot of you ladies (including moi) use. We all know her product rocks, but I BET you don’t know how it all came to be. There’s a beauty and a business lesson to be learned from her, so pay attention. There may be a quiz.

I use Kinky-Curly custard for two strand twists, which is by far the best I’ve used. I love wearing that style in the summer because it gets so hot here I need an excuse to wet my hair as much as possible. Plus, I want an afro that looks like a gigantic snow globe. I’m working towards that. But you can pretty much bet that the whole line of Kinky-Curly will work on almost any curly hair type.

Tips for curly styling by Mike Van Den Abbeel

As a stylist and salon owner in Orlando, FL. we have seen the trend towards easy less maintenance hair. We applaud the clients who decide to go “Au Natural” with their hair. We do however have a few rules to make those curls look good. 1) use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Curly hair has less moisture than straight hair so a good shampoo and conditioner will help ease the frizz. We recommend either dermorganic or Aquage silkening shampoo and conditioner. Both leave the hair clean and well moisturized. 2) If hair is longer, towel dry by squeezing water out of hair, not raking towel over the hair. That creates curl separation, which creates frizz. 3) Use a leave in conditioner. Must hydrate the hair. We like hydrating mist by Aquage. 4) If hair is long enough to part, place part with wide tooth comb while hair is damp. 5) add styling products. We swear by defining gel by aquage with a few drops of argan oil. Argan oil is derived from a nut grown in Morocco helps add shine and nourishment to the hair. There are several argan oils on the market [but] we use Dermorganic argan oil. 6) use a diffuser to blow dry. Once dry, don’t run your hands through your hair. that creates frizz. Curls can be the most maintenance free style as long as clients learn to embrace the rules.

I’ve tried the Aquage products on Chloe (the seven-year-old), who has long coils and fine hair, and the curl defining cream is MUY BUENO!

But! I STILL haven’t perfected the art of wearing my hair natural–especially wash and go’s which I find most appealing, because that means I don’t have to do anything. Just how I like it.
