Mendocino Farms, a chain restaurant with a San Diego location, appears to have no bathroom for its male customers. The source for this story, a white male who would like to remain anonymous, expressed dismay by how the restaurant blatantly disregarded the needs of men to also have a dedicated space for their privacy.
It looks like the facility has a “community” bathroom, and one solely for women. The company made an executive decision to communicate that men, a sizeable source of business, simply do not matter. Has the pendulum swung so far to the left that only women and transgendered people are the only groups worthy of having their privacy and dignity acknowledged?
“I felt like a piece of shit. Like being born male was a CRIME. I’m not a bad man. I worship women. But I feel like there is no place for me anymore,” said the source.
I called the Mendicino Farms Del Mar location myself to confirm, and indeed, there is no dedicated bathroom for men. Management continued to repeat that the unisex bathroom was for men but not theirs exclusively. They had no explanation why they had a dedicated women’s bathroom for all those who identify as women, but no such privacy given to men. Del Mar is a wealthy suburb of San Diego and one of the richest cities in the United States.
Beyond Black & White is hardly the bastion for men’s rights, but even I can smell a rat when the fetid stench drifts my way. Is it really progress if the effort to right past wrongs means to deliberately erase and penalize a group? Isn’t this just one kind of oppression replaced with another?
I’ll admit the whole bathroom gender issue is confusing to me. I have a YouTube channel and get privileges to attend the Los Angeles headquarters. The bathrooms–all of them–are unisex. I’ll admit I felt uncomfortable the first time I used the facilities and momentarily stood in the mirror to fix my makeup and observed a man coming out of the stall next to me. But at least the discomfort was evenly distributed–these were the only bathrooms available–there was no women’s bathroom for me to seek privacy. If the goal is gender equality and gender is simply a “construct,” then why is Mendicino Farms giving preferential treatment of one gender over the other?
