Gotta love the Earthbox Garden Kit. I like it because has rollers so it makes moving your plants around a bit easier, and you can plant virtually anything in them, from artichokes to zucchini. No…I’m serious! Just don’t try to plant fruit trees or anything like that in them.
It’s great for first time gardeners because if you follow the directions you’re pretty much guaranteed a good crop. But no amount of fancy equipment will work if you don’t provide 6-8 hours of sunlight and water. It’s pretty foolproof too, because you’ll never overwater. Excess water is funneled to the bottom of the system through the water reservoir.
Now, I have to be honest. There’s a lot of “stuff” that comes along with this kit, like fertilizer, perlite and such, and I encourage you to use all those things your first go around. However, the company will recommend that you purchase new plant kits each season, which costs between $10 and $15. I find this unnecessary. I’ve been able to use this mechanism through three growing seasons without replacing the “innards,” just supplementing the soil with organic fertilizer and my home made compost. As you can see from the video, my plants look pretty happy.
