I first knew of John Witherspoon from his role as Robert Jedediah “Granddad” Freeman in The Boondocks, where his hilarity permeated the animated character he portrayed. Other iconic roles include Willie Jones in the Friday movies and Soul Plane.
To me, John, like many icons who have made their living in the public square, seemed like he’d live on forever, making people laugh for years to come. Thankfully we have his body of work to remember him by.
He is an icon in the comedy sphere, and will be greatly missed.
John is survived by his wife of 31 years, Angela, and sons Alexander and David. Condolences to his friends and family in this difficult time.
