We got great feedback on our last rundown of film and TV projects featuring black women so here’s more news.
Film
Kerry Washington to portray Anita Hill.
Rihanna’s animated film, Home, opened at #1 with over $54 million at the box office, sounding beating expectations. View a few clips here.
A film on baseball phenom Mone Davis is in development. She is such a class act! Read here on her gracious response after being called a slut by a college baseball player.
Alfre Woodard stars in a new film, Knucklehead.
New documentary coming soon on black women in horror films.
TV
Great news! Here are 71 TV pilots featuring black actors. I quickly looked at the list and it seems at least 30 feature black actresses.
Halle Berry’s Extant is getting a makeover. This MUST happen or the show will be unable to sustain viewers; neither her character nor the drama were very compelling in the first season.
Sleepyheads! Sleepy Hollow has been renewed for third season. Hopefully the concerns with Nicole Beharie being sidelined will be addressed.
Web
Two new series are hitting the web centered around black women living in Britain: Life of Hers and Housemates.
Now funding:
Julie Dash plans a documentary of Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor, an author, performer, and chef from rural South Carolina, in Travel Notes of a Geechee Girl .
“Bad Hair” – Unfortunately, the funding period has closed well short of the goal for a documentary on the natural hair movement. It is unclear if the project will go on. You can see director Velissa Robinson’s vision in this short pitch video.
BIG THANKS to Shadow and Act, which regularly compiles a ton of news on Black actors and actresses. If you are interested in black media, you should be following them.
