I would TOTALLY buy this shirt.

So I got this press release earlier this week and for the life of me I was trying to figure out how the heck I was going to report on this. Here’s the nugget:

New York, NY–Marry Your Baby Daddy Dayâ„¢, the landmark mass wedding seen all over the world, including ABC NEWS 20/20 and CNN, is now online giving couples a chance to go from baby mama/daddy to wife/husband!

Now on it’s face, this seems like a great idea. By now, all of you know how serious I am about addressing the children born out-of-wedlock epidemic in the black community. If you haven’t gotten a chance yet, check out my essay on the subject on CW’s site, titled, “No Wedding, No Womb.”

But this is where it gets funny. The title of this event/site is “Marry Your Baby Daddy Day.” As if! You don’t think that MOST of the women who get knocked up out of wedlock would GLADLY marry their ‘baby daddies’ if only they’d ask? Do women have the power to MAKE a baby daddy MARRY THEM?

We can preach all day about how women are the deciders in the relationship until we are blue in the face, but in this case, 99.99999% of the time, it’s the man who decides IF he wants to marry, not the woman. It’s a nice thought though.

How about calling this event/website “Marry Your Baby Mamma Day?” I can just picture it now–what a beautiful sight…man and woman marrying alongside their progeny, and in the background, a 6’5, 300 pound father-figure standing behind the groom staring down the barrel of a shotgun.

Now that’s funny.

Okay just HAD to add this hilarious (but oh so true) comment from my Facebook friend, Jennifer:

Call me cynical too (and I realize I will get some criticism for saying this), but oh well: what if ‘they baby daddy got several baby mamas?’ Who should he marry? Or what if, ‘she got a few baby daddy’s.’ They need to work out the logistics of this first before they go creating a holiday… LoL!
