Roll up your sleeves.
This is crucial. Always ask mama, or whoever is in the kitchen, if they need help. You don’t need to speak the same language for this. Just say, “Can I help?”, while gesturing towards the dishes, the veggies waiting to be cut or whatever, and be ready to deliver. Most of the time, they’ll say no. In this case, you’ve still make a good impression. Trust me. Mama will see you as a go-getter, who cares about people. She’ll think you were raised right. Especially in families whose culture honors more traditional gender roles. If they say yes, there you are, side-by-side, sharing an experience. It’s not just about mama. If pops-in-law-to-be is doing something that you might be able to assist with, do so. He’ll respect you. And we all know respect is not only earned by talking. Sometimes you just gotta show you can take a punch. Figuratively, of course.
