New BB&W Writer Talks College Dating and Kissing Frogs

When I was a child I used to listen to stories of princess with some chagrin. Even as a child I was suspicious of the happy ending that played out on screen as it did not mirror any immediate relationships around me. But I did emphasize with Belle and her love of books and Mulan’s rejection of her families traditional values ended up ostracizing her until she came back a hero. As a child I realized that was what I wanted, to be my own hero and to ride side by side with someone. Call this the 90’s upbringing but there was just something appealing about being your own woman and being able to do anything or be anyone you wanted. There was no job a man could do that a woman could not and  having 3 older brothers just made this clearer to me.

By the time I stared watching television there were already interracial couples on TV. Angela and Sean were personally my favorite from Boy Meets World. She had the best looking guy in school. she was also the only person he ever fell in love with and wanted to start a family with later on. This along with Mary Kate and Ashley movies (so sue me) where they traveled the world kissing gorgeous men from other countries gave me the strong desire to leave my home and kiss boys from all over the world. I wanted to share my story here because I remember reading another article where the person was Tiana and had her own Cinderella moment and how more of us should share our stories to encourage others. Hers inspired me and I hope I will inspire more people to share and together we can contribute more stories to build a community where every woman is unafraid to shine and learns to take matters into their own hands.

By that I mean I think every woman should find what makes them happy, and learn that sometimes that may not be an easy road, but sometimes it sure can be sweet. The Princess and the Frog holds a special place in my heart. She honestly has become my favorite Disney Princess , I think that Tiana’s style and grace along with her determination and kindness made her beautiful. She found a man that could make her laugh and a Prince who appreciated. supported , and would sacrifice everything for her. The original book is also one of the few cases in which it is the Princess that saves a Prince. When you’re a child you notice these things, as an adult we shape ourselves into who we want to be. I had always heard the saying you had to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince and the great thing about NYC is that it quite literally full of them. So I set off from California where my experiences had been lukewarm. So I planned, I dreamed and and I accomplished. I just finished graduating from college with my bachelors degree in business and even getting my minor in East Asian Studies with a focus in Japanese.

Stay tuned for our author’s first account of frog kissing.

Who am I?

unnamed

I’m a California native just recently graduated from college at 21. I’ve always looked at life like chapters of a book so I wanted to share chapters of my story and what I’ve come across so far. New York City can be a fun place for a girl in her 20’s there is always something new waiting to happen. So as my college adventures have come to a close and I decided to take a look back and share my experiences. There were lessons I had to learn and moments worth mentioning. But most of all I wanted to share more moments in which another ordinary black girl can find love, adventure, and independence of the mind. Just as the story in the original tale goes I had to kiss many frogs to find a prince. So this is a tale mainly of frogs who are not what they seem, until one surprises me.
