No light can come from a dark heart.
Call it karma, reaping what you sow, or getting what comes around. Whatever you name it, I can tell you without a doubt in my mind that what you put out into the universe you do, indeed, get back. Every single major religion has this tenant, and I think because it holds a universal truth: Show kindness, empathy, helpfulness, compassion and love to others, and it will come back to you.
When I graduated college and got so much good advice and encouragement from my mentor (who would later become my writing partner), I never forgot how much free advice she gave, hours on the phone, inviting me to her fancy press club stuff. I swore that when anyone came along who wanted advice or encouragement about how to be a writer, I would give it if I could. Not necessarily because I was expecting anything back from that particular person, but because the law of Paying It Forward commands it.
There’s been little in my life that has given me more of a rush of happiness than to practice some random act of kindness or doing something generous just because I CAN. And like a stone thrown in a lake, that action ripples wider and greater, having a positive affect on others.
People on this blog–most of whom I’ve never met, have shown me such awesome acts of kindness and generosity that I can’t even say “thank you” enough. And it’s because I’ve been shown so much love, I was compelled to write this today. It’s because of that love and kindness that I don’t focus on the ugliness, envy, and jealousy I’ve seen. It’s because of that generosity of spirit that I can continue to smile during those dark times when there is apparently nothing to smile about.
And to the people who read this, please remember the importance of being kind. It doesn’t have to be a big deal–let someone ahead of you in line if you see they’re in a rush or they only have one item as opposed to your 50. Slow down and let that car merge onto the freeway ahead of you. Take time out to talk to a kid who could use some good advice. Do something because it’s the right thing to do, even if you initially gain nothing from it. Pick the prettiest flower, and then give it away.
Likewise, it’s important not to forget or take for granted the kindness and generosity that is shown to you. Don’t forget to say “thank you.” Remember those you needed when the time comes when they need you.
