In a recent article published in the Daily Mail, actress Viola Davis said something that some might find controversial. She thinks more black women should be kissing “hunky” white men on television. “For me, this is something you’ll not see this year, last year, the year before that,” Davis says, sitting in her living room in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles. “That is, a dark-skinned woman of colour, at 53 years old, kissing Liam Neeson. Not just kissing a white man,” she adds, “Liam Neeson, a hunk. And kissing him sexually, romantically,” Davis says in an article published in The Guardian.
As usual, the black sector of YouTube is up in arms because actress Viola Davis said that there should be more representation of black women like her being the love interest of “hunky” white men. I’ve been saying this for a while and even did a video a while back about the need for black women to be seen as worth fighting for. When we go to the movies, we want to imagine ourselves in the shoes of the person who closely represents us being seen as attractive and sexy. That isn’t wrong! I for one will be watching the movie “Widows” when it comes out November 16, 2018.
What do you think about all this? Are movies going in the right direction by diversifying love interests featuring black women and non-black men?
