More than one million signatures were gathered from the citizens of the state of Wisconsin to force a vote on the recall of their governor, Scott Walker.
According to the Financial Times, Walker had only been in office for a year when he ran afoul of union members by pushing through the state legislature a law stripping public sector unions of many of their rights. Teachers and other union members marched, went on strike, and called in sick to protest the treatment they were receiving at the hands of the governor.
Walker has decided not to challenge the verification of the signatures collected, stating that he doesn’t have the time or the resources to do so in the time allotted by the courts for him to respond.
The union members of Wisconsin have shown just what becomes possible when people organize for collective action against those in power.
