You’re Wrong Ms. Underwood, We Do Want Kinky Hair!

Sheryl-Underwood-2Every single person in our society is told that they must wear presentable hairstyles. Nothing wrong with that at all. The problem is, the black woman is often made to feel that what grows out of her head is not presentable. She must chemically alter it in order to make everyone else comfortable. That’s the case whether she’s at work, a nightclub, or even at church or Sunday dinner with her family.  Absolutely no other group of people have to deal with that. Not even children can escape such demeaning beliefs. Comedienne Sheryl Underwood faced a firing squad of criticism after she questioned why anyone would want to save Afro hair. Although she apologized, I can’t help but wonder why she felt she could make degrading comments about African textured hair in the first place. Not only that but she turned to a white woman (Sara Gilbert) and affirmed the “superiority” of the silky textured hair possessed by the white race. That was beyond dreadful. It’s painfully obvious that Underwood thought everyone would find it funny. It should also be noted that her cohosts didn’t seem a bit disturbed by what Underwood said. Makes you wonder…

The Sheryl Underwood chaos has led to a number of questions in the minds of some:

Is her apology sincere?

Why is she taking more of a beating for what she said about Afro hair than what R. Kelly, Chris Brown, or Kevin Hart did or said?

Would there be as much outrage if she hadn’t attacked the hair of a white woman’s children or at any rate biracial children?

Will this make other media personalities think twice before attacking Afro hair?

With so many black women defiantly wearing their natural hair these days, myself included, one would be wise not to alienate such a large chunk of black womanhood. But if I could say one thing to Ms. Underwood, a wig-wearing, proud black republican, it would be that  people do indeed go into beauty supply stores asking for kinky hair. That’s what I prefer when I want kinky twists…
